# Custom Fire Pits for Sensational Family Memories

Remember those childhood summer evenings spent around the campfire, roasting marshmallows and hanging with your friends and family? With custom made fire pits and a little imagination, it's simple to recreate those memories with a modern, designer twist. Why settle for one of those store-bought fire pits when you can have a unique focal point in your yard that provides season after season of enjoyment?

**Location and Size**

Placement of your new fire pit is paramount. Consider the safest location, in terms of proximity to your house, shed, garage and any other flammable structures, but don't forget about convenience. You're much more likely to use a fire pit that's just a few steps away, rather than one tucked into a far corner.

Some municipal bylaws dictate fire pit locations, but you should also consider the landscape design in that area. How about incorporating your new stone fire pit into the patio, with built in benches and convenient log storage? Or creating stone framework for a cast iron fire bowl near your swimming pool, perfect for doubling as an ice bucket during the pool party?

Consider what you will use the fire pit for when determining the optimum size. Get-togethers with the whole gang require large, circular pits while intimate fireside dates call for a smaller set up. Be sure to include adequate seating and firewood storage nearby.

**Design and Safety**

Circular fire pits provide maximum warmth for a group of people, allowing everyone to crowd around the flames. But square or rectangular-shaped fire pits can provide a striking appearance in a modern backyard. Think about the design theme of your yard and build a fire pit that flows smoothly with that theme.

Is there a high point in your yard? If not, can you create one? These areas provide an ideal spot for larger fire pits, allowing for spectacular views from anywhere in the yard. If you're looking for a bit more privacy, avoid those high points and incorporate fences or screens to keep this area out of sight.

Ensure a hose or water source is nearby, no matter what location you choose. If wood burning fires are not allowed in your neighborhood, natural gas and propane outdoor fireplaces provide a safe, attractive and ultra convenient option.
