# Landscape Lighting for Safety and Relaxation

Landscape lighting adds elegance and beauty to any outdoor living space, but did you know that lighting can also create a safer, more functional space for your whole family? Whether placed along a pathway, within the garden or around the patio, high quality landscape lights allow you to enjoy your exterior living room long into the evening hours.

**A Safer Perimeter**

Walk around your yard at any time of day or night with pole-mounted exterior lighting placed along your paths and throughout the garden. Brighter spaces help you to avoid injuries, and also discourages burglars who would rather lurk in dark spaces than be caught moving along a well lit path.

Spotlights also work well to deter thieves, lighting up entrances and windows. Any lighting that exposes possible points of entry should chase away would-be burglars, especially when combined with your well-marked security system.

Be sure that all switches and transformers are easily accessible, and make it convenient to use the outdoor lighting.

**Space to Relax**

Incorporate landscape lighting into your patio design to extend your opportunities for relaxation. Solar-powered lanterns can be installed on railing posts and low voltage lights flush-mounted in stair treads, around the perimeter of the deck or patio and within the railing.   
Think about the mood you want to create and design lighting to match. Overhead lighting is best in dining areas, while lower lights help illuminate the surface of your patio or deck. Patio fireplaces and fire pits also provide a certain amount of light, and when combined with well placed landscape lighting, can brighten the area considerably.

Garden lights allow you to appreciate every aspect of your plants. Check out how different your favorite flowers appear in the evening with landscape lighting spread throughout your beds. Lights won't necessarily chase away critters, but they will help you to see better during night time walks and allow you to share the space safely.  
Install landscape lighting to deter thieves and avoid injuries throughout your yard. Solar-powered or low voltage lighting systems allow for greater enjoyment and make for a more functional, relaxing space. Any way you look at it, landscape lighting is a wise, valuable investment.
