Landscaping the Yard For Spring

Posted by John Tighe on Fri, Mar 02, 2012 @ 08:54 AM

The month of March has arrived and that means it’s time to start thinking about spring. For many that means a major spring cleaning of their Massachusetts home. But remember to save some energy for the outdoor livingspace. Preparing the yard for spring involves a clean up and a set up, helping your lawn and gardens to get a leg up for the coming year.

Spring Cleaning For the Yard

Spring is the perfect time to book a landscaper for aeration and dethatching. These processes help to create nutrient-rich soil and remove the build up of thatch on your grass. With the right equipment these jobs can be done together, truly preparing your yard and helping the grass to establish and grow well.

You’ll also need to spend some time cleaning out the gardens, or hire someone else to do it for you. Last year’s growth needs to be removed and composted. If you come across any diseased foliage, be sure to dispose of it carefully. Do not compost any part of a plant that has been infected with disease, otherwise you risk that problem spreading across your yard.

Spring Set Up With Fertilizer

Spring is also the time to start fertilizing again, setting up your grass for a good summer. Drought can be a problem in the hot summers of Massachusetts, but with proper spring lawn care your grass will have established roots and optimum health throughout the hottest weeks of summer.

Talk to your landscaper about how much fertilizer to use and when to apply the product. It’s important that the fertilizer be applied properly in order to protect the grass from weeds, disease and damage. Also, fertilizing too early results in brighter top growth but less root depth. Those roots help your grass to make it through the summer.

It’s nearly time to start preparing the yard for spring. Make those phone calls now and plan for the preparations to begin; then you can relax when the nice weather hits and enjoy a gorgeous, healthy yard.
